The summer months are a wonderful time of year to get out and explore the community in which one lives. Your senior loved one can also benefit from these summer months. Longer days of sunshine could mean she’s got more hours when she’s comfortable driving short distances. Warmer weather and less fear of bad roads can make travel less stressful and restrictive. It can also be a fantastic time of year to get out with grandkids and do fun activities together. Your senior can even partake in many activities with the assistance of an in-home care provider.
Whether your elderly loved one is looking for something to do on her own, with her in-home care provider, or with the entire family, here are eight low-cost activities available in most parts of the country.
Bird watching. Summer is a great time to get out and see what birds have returned to your community. Your elderly loved one can do this in her backyard with her senior home care provider, or she can head to a local park or wildlife preservation area to find birds that have migrated to her area. Some parks may charge a nominal fee but many are free.
Visiting local farmer’s markets. This can be a great activity to do right away in the morning before the heat builds for the day. Your loved one can find local produce for some delicious salads and snacks later, as well as support local vendors who are selling their wares. It can also be completely cost-free by simply strolling through all of the booths and enjoying some outdoor “window” shopping.
Fishing. While she might need a fishing license to participate, many states have a reduced rate for seniors who want to spend some time sitting by the lake fishing. It’s a relaxing way to spend a few hours enjoying nature.
Walking/hiking in local nature preserves. Have your senior home care provider help your loved one find local state parks or national forests to stroll in this summer to commune with the summer sounds and sights of summer. She might spot some local wildlife or wildflowers along her stroll. Any walks in fairly secluded areas should include a companion to help her stay safe so have her consider bringing her senior home care companion along if the family can’t make it.
Gardening. Growing flowers and/or vegetables is a great way to enjoy the summer months and provide some good exercise for your loved one. Consider doing most gardening in the early morning or evening when the sun isn’t as strong and remember insect repellant to keep the biting bugs away.
Swimming. If there is a local pool nearby, summer is the time to visit it. Consider a family day at the pool so everyone can enjoy it and spend some fun family time together.
Catching a game. While going to a professional ball game can cost a lot of money, finding a local community team or tournament can be just the thing for enjoying some summer evening ball playing while drinking a cold beer and eating a hot dog. It’s the perfect summer activity.
Picnicking. Nothing says summer like a family picnic or even a small picnic for one or two. Pack up some light food and drink and bring it out to a park to enjoy al fresco.
Summer has plenty of opportunities to stay active without breaking the bank.
